In the 1990s, a Chicago hotdog stand owner convinces a radio station entrepreneur to turn one of his stations from a music format to all-sports. Then, the the fast food restaurant owner fast talks his way onto the airwaves and soon becomes the highest paid local sports broadcaster in the nation. That’s just part of the Mike North story. Mike North was born on Chicago's north side in 1952. This formative chapter in Mike's upbringing reveals that he had a number of challenges growing up. The apartment buildings he lived in provided little of the comforts most of us grew up with. His father, a heavy drinker, drove him hard and the two had a complex relationship. Both his parents put pressure on him to do well in school, but the classroom was a battle Mike could not win.As a teen he worked multiple jobs and developed a competitive fire on the sports field - and in life - that still blazes today.Mike shares intimate stories here that are Chicagoan, working-class, and at times heart-breaking.

Movies and newspapers were a big part of Mike North's adolescence and teen years. After he got over his reading issues, he poured over every page of Chicago's newspapers. As for movies, Mike was not averse to hop on a bus and travel miles to see a movie. By himself. But, it was music that provided Mike North with all the inspiration he needed to overcome dark days.

Finally, Mike takes us back to how his broadcasting career started and the fateful day he spoke to radio executives and made his biggest score ever, convincing them to start an all-sorts radio station.
